Rory Gallagher - Live In Europe (1972) - Lp

William Rory Gallagher, 2 March 1948 – 14 June 1995) was an Irish blues and rock multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and bandleader. Born in Ballyshannon, County Donegal, and brought up in Cork,
Gallagher recorded solo albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s, after forming the band Taste during the late 1960s.
He was a talented guitarist known for his charismatic performances and dedication to his craft.

Live in Europe is an album released by Irish blues guitarist Rory Gallagher in 1972.
It is a series of live recordings made by Gallagher during his European tour. Unusual for a live album it contains only two previously released songs ("Laundromat" and "In Your Town").
All the other songs are either new Gallagher songs or Gallagher's interpretation of traditional blues songs.

Live in Europe was released at the end of the British "blues boom" that began in the 1960s. Sparked by bands such as the Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, and Cream fans and musicians were fascinated by authentic Chicago blues artists such as Muddy Waters. Gallagher had an extensive knowledge of this kind of music. Although he tended to play down arguments about what was "pure" blues. In an interview at the time he said:
"If there was one fault with the boom in the 1960s, it was that it was very straight-faced and very pontificatory, or whatever the word is. It used to annoy me that there was an attitude of 'Thou shalt not play the blues unless you know who played second acoustic guitar behind Sonny Boy Williamson the first on the B-side of whatever.' That kind of thing gets music nowhere, it’s like collecting stamps. I mean, I buy books on the blues and I check out the B-sides and I know who plays on what records and that’s fine. But then you’ve got to open that up to the rest of the people. Because that kind of snobbery defeats the purpose; it kills the music."
Rather than live versions of his most popular songs there are only two songs on the album that were previously recorded by Gallagher in the studio, "Laundromat" from his first album and "In Your Town" from his Deuce album.
All the other songs are Gallagher's versions of classic blues songs. The album starts with what was to become a signature song for Gallagher, Junior Wells' "Messin' With the Kid". The song "I Could've Had Religion" was Gallagher's salute to what he called the "redemption style blues" of the Robert Wilkins and Gary Davis.
After hearing the song on this album Bob Dylan expressed interest in recording it and assumed it was a traditional blues number rather than an original song by Gallagher. Blind Boy Fuller's "Pistol Slapper Blues" is next.
 Gallagher then shows his versatility, swapping his Stratocaster for a mandolin and performing the song "Going to My Home Town" with the audience stomping their feet and cheering in response as Gallagher sings "do you want to go?".
The finale is the straight ahead hard rocking "Bullfrog Blues" written by William Harris. Gallagher switches back to the Stratocaster and the full band and gives bassist Gerry McAvoy and drummer Wilgar Campbell, a chance to solo.

Oscar Harris - With Lots Of Love (1987) - Lp

Oscar Harris (Albina, 30 november 1943) is een Surinaams-Nederlandse zanger. In de jaren zeventig was hij vermoedelijk de bekendste Surinaamse artiest in Nederland.

Toen Harris in 1963 naar Nederland kwam om te studeren voor architect/dominee vervulde hij ook zijn dienstplicht. Twee jaar later vervolgde hij zijn zangcarrière bij The Twinkle Stars, een vanuit Amsterdam opererende Surinaamse band.
Met hun grootste hit Soldier's prayer stonden zij twee weken op nr. 1 in de Daverende Dertig. In totaal stond de single 15 weken in de hitlijst. Leadzanger Billy Jones verliet de groep in 1972; voor hem in de plaats kwam de toen 17-jarige Humphrey Campbell. In 1973 besloot Harris om de groep te verlaten om een solocarrière te beginnen.
Na wat pieken en dalen en tijdelijke koppelingen aan zangeressen kwam aan het einde van de jaren zeventig zijn solocarrière goed van de grond. Hij scoorde in die tijd diverse hits met een mix van vrolijke, Caribisch getinte meezingers en zwoele soulballads.

In 1980 beleeft Harris zijn internationale doorbraak met de ook buiten Europa (o.a. Israël, veel Afrikaanse landen en Indonesië) gigantische kraker Song For The Children. Een meerjarig samenwerkingsverband met de Haarlemse zangeres Debbie (solohits: Everybody Join Hands en Angelino) pakt vervolgens echter verkeert uit.

De hitstroom stokt en Harris raakt langzaam maar zeker uit beeld. Op grond van zijn eerder verworden reputatie ontbreekt het hem evenwel ook dan bepaald niet aan werk. Hij treedt veel op in discotheken en voor de radio (begeleid door onder meer het Metropole Orkest) en er blijven regelmatig platen van hem verschijnen.

In 1987 brengt Oscar zijn album "With Lost Of Love" uit. Het album bevat de singles "Two Hearts", een duet met Marjorie Barnes, en de single "Baby Don’t Get Hooked On Me".
Verder zingt Oscar op dit album duets met o.a.:  Humphrey Campbell ("I’m Still In Love") en met Lisa Boray ("Without You").

Confetti´s - 92…Our First Album (1989) - Lp

Confetti’s was a Belgian new beat band from the 1980s.
Producers were Serge Ramaekers and Dominique Sas, sometimes credited as The Maxx.
On stage Confetti’s was fronted by singer Peter Renkens and female dancers Marleen, Tania, Hilde and Daniëlla.
The band became one of the first to break through into mainstream music as a new beat act.

Their most successful period was 19881989 with international hits like "The Sound Of C" and "C In China". Other releases were "Keep Smiling", "C Countdown", "C Day Live" and "Circling Stars".
One year after releasing their last single "Put ‘M Up" in 1990, the Confetti’s withdrew from the spotlight.

The C in their first release "The Sound Of C" stands for the Belgian club Confetti’s in Brasschaat, near Antwerp. Serge Ramaekers and Dominique Sas were working on a marketing campaign to gain more publicity for the club.
One of the barmen at Confetti’s (Peter Renkens) became the face of the marketing campaign, which included the single "The Sound Of C". To shoot a music video the band was dropped at the main shopping street in Antwerp De Meir and performed "The Sound Of C" in front of hundred citizens passing by.

Due to the success of the first single, a live act was put together and Confetti’s traveled the world to promote their new beat music. On stage singer Peter was always wearing a captain uniform. The dress code for new beat was black & white clothes combined with childish accessories. In 1989 they released their only album "92… Our First Album"

The Carpenters - The Singles 1969-1973 (1973) - Lp

The Carpenters were an American vocal and instrumental duo consisting of siblings Karen and Richard Carpenter. Producing a distinctively soft musical style, they became among the best-selling music artists of all time.

Richard and Karen Carpenter signed to A&M Records on April 22, 1969, under the name "Carpenters". Since Karen was technically underage (she was 19 at the time), her parents had to co-sign for her.
Richard and Karen had decided to sign as "Carpenters", without the definite article. Karen said they had been influenced in the name by the pop music group Bread.

During their 14-year career, The Carpenters recorded 11 albums, 31 singles, five television specials, and a short-lived television series.

Their career ended in 1983 by Karen's death from heart failure brought on by complications of anorexia. Extensive news coverage surrounding the circumstances of her death increased public awareness of eating disorders.

The duo's brand of melodic pop produced a record-breaking run of hit recordings on the American Top 40 and Adult Contemporary charts, and they became leading sellers in the soft rock, easy listening and adult contemporary genres.

Richard Carpenter was the creative force behind the Carpenter sound. An accomplished keyboard player, composer and arranger, music critic Daniel Levitin called Richard Carpenter "one of the most gifted arrangers to emerge in popular music." In a period when contemporary music was dominated by heavy rock, their smooth harmonies were not in step with the trends of the day.



The sound the Carpenters were going for was rich and melodic, along the same vein as the harmonies found in their contemporaries The Beach Boys and the The Mamas & the Papas, but with greater fullness and orchestration. Most of Richard's arrangements were classical in style, with frequent use of strings and occasional brass and woodwind instruments as well.
Richard's work with Karen was heavily influenced by the music of Les Paul, whose overdubbing of the voice of partner Mary Ford allowed her to be used as both the lead and harmonizing vocals. By use of multi-tracked recordings, Richard was able to use Karen and himself for the harmonies to back Karen's lead.
The overdubbed background harmonies were distinctive to the Carpenters, but it was the soulful, engaging sound of Karen's lead voice that made them so recognizable.

Karen did not possess a powerful singing voice, but when miked closely she conveyed a great deal of feeling. Tight miking required perfect pitch, which came easily to her. Richard Coles, a musician and broadcaster, commented: "No singer is so closely miked up so unforgivingly as Karen Carpenter. That is frightening for singers because the closer the microphone the more unforgiving it is in exposing the weaknesses in a singer's voice."
Karen's contralto voice was warm and distinctive. Though her vocal range spanned three octaves, Richard arranged their music to take advantage of the rich quality of Karen's lower range.


The Carpenters did not record a new album in 1974. The group had been touring extensively and the principals were exhausted. In Richard's words, "there was simply no time to make one. Nor was I in the mood." During this period, the pair released just one Hot 100 single, a Paul Williams/Roger Nichols composition called "I Won't Last a Day Without You".

Taken from their 1972 LP A Song for You, the Carpenters finally decided to release their original two years after its original LP release and some months after Maureen McGovern's 1973 cover. In March 1974, the single version became the fifth and final selection from that album project to chart in the Top 20, reaching No. 11 on the Hot 100 on May 25, 1974. Since "Top of the World" was at No. 11 and falling in 1974's first week and "Please Mr. Postman" was at No. 11 and rising in 1974's last week, the Carpenters failed all three times, by one position each time, that year to reach the top 10.

In place of the new album for 1974, their first greatest hits package was released, featuring new remixes of their prior hit singles, some with a newly recorded lead, and including newly recorded bridges and transition material so that each side of the album would play through with no breaks, something that Richard would come to regret. This compilation was entitled The Singles: 1969–1973, and topped the charts in the U.S. for one week, on January 5, 1974. It also topped the United Kingdom chart for 17 weeks (non-consecutive) and became one of the best-selling albums of the decade, ultimately selling more than 7 million copies in the U.S. alone.
