Mary MacGregor - Torn Between Two Lovers (1976) - Lp

Mary Macgregor (born May 6, 1948) is an American singer, best known for singing the 1976 song "Torn Between Two Lovers", which topped the Billboard charts for two weeks.
Macgregor was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, United States. She began studying piano at age six, and was singing with bands by the time she was a teenager.
After attending the University of Minnesota, Macgregor began to tour the country with various acts and caught the attention of Peter Yarrow from Peter, Paul & Mary. She soon joined Yarrow, singing backup on a solo tour, and made an appearance on his Love Songs album.
Signed to Ariola America records, Macgregor released her debut single, "Torn Between Two Lovers", in late 1976; it became a smash hit by February 1977. The new year saw the single top both the pop and adult contemporary charts and was certified as a gold record. In addition, it reached #3 on Billboard's Country chart and also reached No. 4 in the UK Singles Chart.
Two further singles from the album of the same name, also written and produced by Yarrow, charted but were overwhelmed by the success of the title track.

Macgregor admitted in The Billboard Book of Number One Hits by Fred Bronson that she hated her own chart-topper, chiefly because she had little sympathy for the narrator of "Torn Between Two Lovers", a woman who confesses to her husband that she is having an affair, but pleads with her husband to stay with her and accept the situation.
Macgregor also said that the song indirectly led to the breakup of her own marriage, because her career kept her away from home so often that her relationship with her husband strained, and they decided to separate.
Macgregor did acknowledge that the song was successful because it appealed to listeners who had found themselves in the situation described in the lyrics.

Karla Bonoff - Restless Nights (1979) - Lp

Karla Bonoff (born December 27, 1951) is an American singer-songwriter, primarily known for her songwriting. As a songwriter, Bonoff's songs have been interpreted by other artists such as "Home" by Bonnie Raitt, "Tell Me Why" by Wynonna Judd, and "Isn't It Always Love" by Lynn Anderson.

In her early career, Bonoff sang background vocals for Ronstadt and Wendy Waldman before releasing her debut album in 1977.
Restless Nights is the second album by singer/songwriter Karla Bonoff. The album peaked at No. 31 on the Billboard albums chart. Recorded at: The Sound Factory, Los Angeles
Karla Bonoff seems to have had some coming up with material for her second album, which may explain why it took two years (a long time in the '70s) and contained covers of "When You Walk in the Room" and "The Water Is Wide," and also why the originals weren't as uniformly excellent as those on her first album. True, leadoff track "Trouble Again" was a gem (as Linda Ronstadt proved when she recorded it on her Cry Like a Rainstorm -- Howl Like the Wind album in 1989), but some of the other material was only pedestrian.
As usual, half of L.A. was playing and singing on the record, which meant that you got people like Don Henley and James Taylor for your money. But Restless Nights did not represent the leap in quality that would have been required to vault Bonoff into the ranks of her star friends (it didn't have a big hit single, either), and so, instead of providing a consolidation of her reputation, it caused a rethinking of career direction reflected on her third album.

Peter Allen - Taught By Experts (1976) - Lp

Peter Allen (born Peter Richard Woolnough; 10 February 1944 – 18 June 1992) was an Australian singer-songwriter and entertainer. His songs were made popular by many recording artists, including Elkie Brooks, Melissa Manchester and Olivia Newton-John, with one, "Arthur's Theme", winning an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1981. In addition to recording many albums, he enjoyed a cabaret and concert career, including appearing at the Radio City Music Hall riding a camel. His song "I Still Call Australia Home", used extensively in advertising campaigns, was added to the National Film and Sound Archive's Sounds of Australia registry in 2013.
Allen was the first husband of Liza Minnelli, with the couple divorcing after seven years of marriage; he later came out as gay.

Taught by Experts is the fourth studio album by Peter Allen, released in 1976. It spawned the hit "I Go to Rio", and the Top 10 hit "The More I See You".The album featured such musicians as Thom Rotella, Jerome Richardson, Lesley Gore and Dusty Springfield.
Sounding like a cross between Neil Sedaka and Billy Joel, without the Top 40 appeal of those voices, Peter Allen certainly seemed like a man who was much too Broadway for the pop charts he helped Olivia Newton-John, Melissa Manchester, and Christopher Cross climb. His version of "The More I See You" is a safe remake, but a Chris Montez cover of the tune from the 1945 Betty Grable film has the charm. This version did get adult contemporary airplay in 1976, and features Herb Alpert on trumpet, Jim Gordon on drums, Carole King's ex-husband, Charles Larkey, on bass, Bostonian Alan Estes on percussion, and even labelmate Lesley Gore on backing vocals. Bobby Rozario's orchestration is lovely, but what needed to happen here was to have Lesley Gore duet with the singer. Peter Allen was just too overbearing for a world where even Barry Manilow at his most ostentatious could wink and get away with it. The other problem with this album is the production by Brooks Arthur, the same dilemma Lesley Gore's Love Me by Name album suffered at the hands of Quincy Jones -- a term producer Jimmy Miller called overproduction.

Mr. Miller often said there is no right or wrong in production, but there was half a wink when he said that. At the top of his game he may have brought Peter Allen's vocals down a bit in the mix of "Harbour" and let the music swell. A beautiful composition by the singer, his vocals are so far out in the mix that the elegance is totally drowned out. Where Ronnie Milsap would get away with being loud on a song like "Harbour" is where Allen ventures -- and succeeds -- on the title track, "Taught by Experts." This is blues/schmaltz/pop/cabaret, and it is the best track on the record with its fatalist view on love: "better you get hurt than me." It's a professor of love teaching love that is tough. The late Peter Allen had an army of friends to help him: Carole Bayer Sager co-wrote four of the six songs on side one, Adrienne Anderson another, while the vocalist composed most of side two. "Quiet Please, There's a Lady on Stage" is, no doubt, for his ex-mother-in-law, Judy Garland. It's the singer with just his piano for the first couple of verses, and it is also a highlight, but the voice -- again -- is so far out in the mix that the excellent musicianship doesn't have the opportunity to buoy the singer/songwriter. Sure, he's got great pipes, and sure, these are a bunch of pros executing the music with absolute precision.

What was needed was a bit more soul and a lot more breathing room for the parts. Sometimes artists on this level get too sure of themselves, and some kind of perspective seems lost during the recording of Taught by Experts. The album includes Peter Allen's staple, "I Go to Rio," and as a testament to his life in the business, it should be remixed with the love and care it deserves.

Margriet Eshuijs - On The Move Again (1979) - Lp

In 1975 werd de eerste lp, 'As We Are' uitgebracht.

Margriet heeft tijdens haar carrière diverse prijzen ontvangen voor haar werk, waaronder Edisons ('On The Move Again', 'Black Pearl' en 'Right On Time') en een Gouden Harp ('Sometimes').
