Betty Wright - Betty Wright Live (1978) - Lp

Bessie Regina Norris, better known by her stage name, Betty Wright (born December 21, 1953), is an American soul and R&B singer and songwriter, who rose to fame in the 1970s with hits such as "Clean Up Woman" and "Tonight is the Night".
When Betty Wright Live was first released in 1978, there was some speculation on whether or not it was really a live album or simply a studio recording with canned applause.
To be sure, the applause doesn't sound authentic, and the original LP's liner notes listed neither a recording date nor a location.
But whether it was recorded on stage or in the studio.

Live became best known for its version of "Tonight Is the Night," a moving account of a young woman losing her virginity to her first true love.
But the gritty Miami soulster is equally expressive on Leon Russell's "A Song for You" and versions of her hits "Where Is the Love" and "Clean Up Woman" (which is performed as the main song in an 11-minute medley).
Even if the title Betty Wright Live is an example of false advertising, this is a recording that fans of gritty, emotionally direct Southern soul would do well to experience.

Elvis Presley - ´Soundtrack´ Fun In Acapulco (1963) Lp

Fun in Acapulco is the nineteenth album by American singer and musician Elvis Presley, released on RCA Victor Records.
The last film Elvis made prior to the outbreak of Beatlemania, Fun in Acapulco is redolent of the silly, carefree days of the early '60s -- a time when rock & roll appeared to be in remission, partially because Presley devoted his time to cinematic froth like this. Conceptually, Fun in Acapulco, a kissing cousin to Blue Hawaii, is a lark set in a sunny, exotic location and has a soundtrack to match. Every song has a south of the border feel, either in its rhythms or mock Spanish, a tactic that makes sense in the confines of the film but can be deeply ridiculous on record, particularly on the cartoonish "Guadalajara," where mariachi and opera meet in garish fashion, "(There's) No Room to Rhumba in a Sports Car," and "The Bullfighter Was a Lady," pieces of camp designed to be heard nowhere outside the confines of the film. Such frivolities seem even more absurd when contrasted with similarly spirited cuts that actually do work: the woozy title track, "Mexico," "Marguerita," and "Bossa Nova Baby," which in this context seems to rock pretty hard. Despite all this, the clear standout here is "Slowly But Surely," a bit of hip-swiveling seduction positively drenched in fuzz guitar, the first time such an effect was heard on a Presley record. Here, Elvis seems to tentatively engage with the swinging '60s that are just around the corner, while the rest of the record belongs to squaresville, an aesthetic that's alternatingly amiable and embarrassing.

The third of his tropical "travelogue films" for Paramount Pictures after Blue Hawaii and Girls! Girls! Girls! finds Elvis frolicing in Mexico. The standard stable of songwriters for Presley delivered songs to match, with titles like "Marguerita," "El Toro," "You Can't Say No In Acapulco," and "The Bullfighter Was A Lady." Included as well was the 1937 standard "Guadalajara" by Pepe Guízar. With the change from the normal routine, and with the addition of trumpet players Rudolph Loera and Anthony Terran, Presley engaged the material with greater enthusiasm than on recent soundtrack outings. Four of these songs would be included on the 1995 compilation Command Performances: The Essential 60s Masters II: the title track, "Mexico," "Marguerita," and the song released as the lead single, "Bossa Nova Baby".
"Bossa Nova Baby" arrived in stores one month prior to the soundtrack, coupled with the track "Witchcraft" by rhythm and blues songwriter and arranger Dave Bartholomew and a hit for The Spiders in 1956. The fact that the bossa nova craze of the 1960s was a Brazilian phenomenon rather than a Mexican one mattered little, as the single peaked at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as reaching as high as the 20th spot on the R&B singles chart.
Compensating for the short ten-track It Happened at the World's Fair album, Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker, insisted on making Fun in Acapulco a good value. Two additional tracks, "Love Me Tonight" and "Slowly But Surely" were pulled from the aborted album sessions of May 1963, and added here to bring the running order up to thirteen tracks.

Fons Jansen - ´De Lachende Kerk´ (1964) - Lp

Soundtrack - High Society (1956) - Lp

High Society is a 1956 American musical comedy film directed by Charles Walters and starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, and Frank Sinatra. The film was produced by Sol C. Siegel for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and shot in VistaVision and Technicolor, with music and lyrics by Cole Porter.
Based on the play The Philadelphia Story by Philip Barry, with a screenplay by John Patrick, the film is about a successful popular jazz musician who tries to win back the affections of his ex-wife, who is preparing to marry another man.
The cast also features Celeste Holm, John Lund and Louis Calhern, with a musical contribution by Louis Armstrong.
High Society was the last film appearance of Grace Kelly, before she became Princess consort of Monaco.

Producer Sol C. Siegel paid Porter $250,000 for his first original film score in eight years; it introduced a couple of pop standards, including "True Love" and "You're Sensational". Not only did Sinatra and Crosby collaborate for the first time, but behind the scenes two master orchestrators – Conrad Salinger and Nelson Riddle – melded their arrangements under the baton of Johnny Green. Armstrong and his band get a couple of standout moments and Kelly has her only role in a musical.

A soundtrack album was released the year of the film's release and was a major success in both America and the United Kingdom. It has been said[citation needed] that one of the main reasons star Sinatra was drawn to the film was a mock-tipsy duet with his boyhood idol Crosby on "Well, Did You Evah!", a song from an earlier Porter show, DuBarry Was a Lady (1939), re-adapted and added at the last minute when it was noted that the two singers did not have a duet to perform in the film.
The title of the song "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" gained new significance a half-century later as the title of a global game show franchise. "I Love You, Samantha" has also become a jazz favorite for improvisations.

Marti Webb - Tell Me On A Sunday (1980) - Lp

Margaret A. "Marti" Webb (born 13 December 1943, Hampstead, London) is an English actress and singer, who appeared on stage in Evita, before starring in Andrew Lloyd Webber's one woman show Tell Me on a Sunday in 1980.
This included her biggest hit single, "Take That Look Off Your Face", a UK top three hit, with the parent album also reaching the top three.
Margaret A. Webb was born in Hampstead to Cecil (a clockmaker) and Selina Elizabeth Webb, and raised in Cricklewood. Her parents took her to variety shows and pantomimes as a child. Her father played the violin and her mother sang and played the piano. She attended dance lessons from the age of 3 and first performed in public at the age of 7, at the Scala Theatre, London.
After a school teacher suggested to her parents that her natural talent for singing and dancing should be nurtured, she was educated at the Aida Foster stage school from the age of 12, where she eventually became Head Girl.

Tell Me on a Sunday was the first solo album released by Marti Webb.
All tracks were written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black and told the story of an English girl who has emigrated to the United States and embarks on a succession of romances.
The music later formed the first half of a stage show called Song and Dance, in which Webb also starred.
As well as composing the piece, Lloyd Webber also arranged and produced the album. Released in 1980, having been recorded in the latter part of 1979, it was one of his first pieces of work to be published by his own Really Useful Company, which he had formed three years earlier.
The musicians were mainly those that had been involved with the Variations album. American musical theatre actress Elaine Stritch performed a cameo role as an answering service attendee on the track "Capped Teeth and Caesar Salad".
The first single to be released, "Take That Look Off Your Face" reached No.3 in the UK chart in February 1980, while the title track was a minor hit some months later. The album itself was one of the biggest selling albums of the year, when it reached No.2, spending 23 weeks on the chart.

George McCrae - Rock Your Baby (1974) - Lp

George Warren McCrae, Jr. (born October 19, 1944) is an American soul and disco singer, most famous for his 1974 hit "Rock Your Baby".
McCrae was the second of nine children, born in West Palm Beach, Florida.
He formed his own singing group, the Jivin' Jets, before joining the United States Navy in 1963. Four years later, he reformed the group, with his wife Gwen joining the line-up, but soon afterwards they decided to work as a duo, recording for Henry Stone's Alston record label.
Gwen then won a solo contract, with George acting as her manager as well as doing some singing on sessions and in clubs in Palm Beach.
He was about to return to college to study law enforcement, when Richard Finch and Harry Wayne Casey of KC and the Sunshine Band invited him to sing the lyrics for a song that they had recorded for the band, but could not reach the high notes that were required for the song.
The original intention was that Gwen, his wife, should record it, but she was late for the session and George recorded alone.

It suited his high-pitched voice to the extent that the song, "Rock Your Baby", became one of the first hits of the disco era in 1974, selling an estimated eleven million copies worldwide, topping the charts in the U.S., UK.
The song was so successful that Rolling Stone magazine voted it the #1 song of the year in 1974.
McCrae received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male R&B Vocalist the following year.
Two further single releases, "I Can't Leave You Alone" and "It's Been So Long", taken from his album Rock Your Baby, also reached the UK Singles Chart Top 10.
